The chipped mug trembled in Leo's hands. He’d reheated the instant coffee three times already, the bitter taste a dull ache in his mouth. Across the tiny kitchen table, Maya was meticulously arranging her succulent collection, each tiny pot a perfect, silent rebellion. Leo needed something, anything, to fill the void that had begun echoing through their shared apartment since Liam had left. A small, furry presence. "Come on, Maya," he croaked, his voice barely audible above the hum of the refrigerator. "Just a little kitten. It wouldn’t take up much space."

He ran a hand through his already messy hair. He'd shown Maya pictures of kittens all week, each photo a meticulously researched attempt to sway her.
