"Please," Amelia whispered, her voice cracking. She had been awake all night, crafting a Powerpoint presentation titled "Reasons Why a Hamster Will Revolutionize Our Lives." It sat, unopened, on her laptop, the glow reflecting in her widened eyes. Across the living room, Chloe was engrossed in a novel, the pages occasionally rustling. Amelia was on the verge of tears. She had lost her job, and the isolation was gnawing at her sanity.

The silence was deafening. Chloe finally looked up, her expression a mix of annoyance and pity. "Amelia, we've been over this. I'm allergic, remember?" The words were a soft blow, but Amelia felt like she'd been physically struck.

Amelia’s fingers clutched at the edge of the sofa, her knuckles white. She looked around the apartment as if she couldn’t recognize the place. It felt cold, devoid of life. She needed something, anything, to break the monotony, to bring some light back into her life.
