He’d found her in the library, a space she'd always loved. He’d walked right past, his eyes skimming over the shelves, not even a glance in her direction. Years they had spent there, hidden among the books. Now, she felt unseen, a ghost.

"Mark?" she whispered, the name catching in her throat. He turned, a polite smile on his face. He looked at her, tilting his head as if wondering what she wanted.

"Sorry, do I know you?" His tone was polite, professional. She felt a cold sweat break out on her forehead. The air suddenly felt thin, hard to breathe.
