She trailed him, across the bustling city square. He didn't recognize her, didn't stop. It was a pilgrimage, a last hope. Her feet were screaming, but she couldn't stop. She needed to know. The cold wind bit at her cheeks, mirroring the chill that had settled in her bones.

He was laughing with a woman, sunlight glinting off his teeth. Seeing him happy felt like a punch in the gut. Stopping, she called out, "David, wait!"

He turned, eyebrows raised. "I'm sorry, do you need something?" he asked, as though talking to a stranger. Her stomach lurched. The world seemed to tilt.
