The upscale restaurant’s clinking glasses and hushed conversations amplified the agony. Alex, the songwriter, couldn't focus on the date across from him. His song, “Fallen Star,” was playing. This was her, his ex-girlfriend, who had become a famous singer, singing *his* song. He had given it to her years ago, a gift. Now, it was a weapon.

He forced a smile, but his jaw felt locked. The melody swirled around them, mocking his current state. He barely touched his expensive meal. He'd poured his heart into that song, and now it was fueling her success.

He excused himself, the polite words scratching at his throat. He went outside, the cool air doing little to soothe his internal turmoil. He needed to get away, to disappear.
