The hum of the sewing machine was a constant background noise. Fiona, a dressmaker by trade, watched her daughter, Grace, meticulously design and sew intricate gowns. Grace was a whirlwind of fabric, needles, and threads. Fiona was in dire straits. She was in arrears on her mortgage and feared the loss of the house. Every stitch was a threat, every bolt of fabric a reminder of her predicament. The sale of her precious sewing machines, her own tools of the trade, was looming.

“Grace, are you sure you have enough material to complete this dress?” Fiona asked, her voice cracking.

Grace looked up, her face flushed with concentration. “Yes, Mom, I’m good.”

Fiona turned away, a knot forming in her throat. She needed to find a way to stop this, to protect her family.
