The glow of the computer screen illuminated Thomas's worried face. His son, Ethan, was a coding whiz, spending his days and nights writing software. Thomas, a former tech entrepreneur, had lost his company in the dot-com bust. Ethan’s obsession was a reminder of his own failure. He needed to sell his remaining investments, but Ethan was completely unconcerned. His own investments were in the virtual world. The weight of his past failures was heavy.

“Ethan, have you considered how we pay the bills?” Thomas asked, a tremor in his voice.

Ethan, without looking up, said, “Don’t worry, Dad, I'll figure it out.”
