The morning commute was a blur. He stared out the train window, the city rushing past, mirroring the frenetic pace of his thoughts. He hadn't bothered with breakfast. The familiar knot in his stomach tightened with each stop, anticipating the news. He gripped the pole so hard, his knuckles were white.

He reviewed his LinkedIn profile on his phone. He had to be prepared for the announcement. He'd even rehearsed the 'congratulations' speech he'd give Sarah, the forced sincerity of it making him want to throw up.

He needed something to take the edge off.
