The silence in the break room was deafening. He poured himself another cup of coffee, the bitter taste doing nothing to alleviate the internal turmoil. He had stayed late the last few nights, working on a side project, hoping to show his commitment. It seemed futile now.

He kept replaying the conversations he'd had with his colleagues, searching for clues, for an advantage. He caught his reflection in the coffee machine. He looked haggard. He rubbed his eyes, trying to clear the fog. He felt like he was standing on the edge of a precipice.

He went back to his desk and stared at his screen. The words blurred before him.
