The rent was overdue, and the landlord was already making threatening noises. Sarah stared out her window, watching the rain blur the city lights. Her small bakery was on the verge of collapsing, and she couldn't see a way out.

She was sorting through her mother's belongings after the funeral. In a drawer of the antique desk, she found a carefully preserved letter. A letter of resignation. Her mother, who had always seemed so poised and successful, had quit her high-powered advertising job years before Sarah was born.
