The phone call from his advisor was short and to the point. The college was shutting down. Tom hung up, his hands shaking so violently he dropped the phone. The screen shattered on the floor, the shards glinting like tiny daggers.

He stared at the damage, his breath coming in short, choppy gasps. His plan, his life, everything he’d meticulously organized, suddenly dissolved into a chaotic mess. The weight of his impending failure threatened to suffocate him.

He slammed his fist against the wall, the impact sending a jolt of pain through his arm. He needed to do something, anything. He could not fail. He could not go home.
