The lecture hall, once brimming with students, now felt cavernous and empty. Amelia sat alone, the words of the professor, usually so engaging, now a meaningless drone. She’d been so close to graduation, so close to escaping her old life.

She ran her hands across the smooth surface of the desk, the polished wood a cold, hard reminder of the impending loss. Her stomach churned. A wave of nausea washed over her. She felt like she was trapped in a dark, suffocating room.

She wanted to scream, to lash out, to do anything to make this nightmare end. But instead, she sat there, motionless, the silence amplifying the deafening roar in her ears.
