The news arrived via a phone call from his sister. "Mama Rosa's is shutting down!" He simply said, "Well," and hung up. The place where the sauce was always too sweet, the service slow.

He stared out the window, a muscle in his jaw ticking. He'd never really liked the place. The ambiance was too loud. The wait was too long. He went less often than he should have, to avoid the disappointment.

He went into the kitchen and poured himself a glass of water, his hand shaking slightly. The kitchen seemed bigger than usual. He stood in the middle of it. He needed a distraction, he decided.
