The gift bag, a gaudy monstrosity with a glittery bow, sat on the floor, blocking the door. Mr. Peterson, irritated, had to maneuver around it to get into his classroom. He knew who it was from: Jessica, a student who'd once called him "old."

He bent down to pick it up, his back protesting the movement. He peered inside, briefly, seeing a collection of bath products. He set the bag on his desk and then proceeded to ignore it, choosing instead to focus on grading papers. He found himself adding extra comments, more critical than usual.
