The framed photograph was a portrait of herself. The one that had been taken in a school group shot that year. On the back, in elegant script, it read "To my favorite teacher." It was from Claire, who'd been incredibly difficult. She'd disrupted the class every single day. She'd caused him endless headaches.

Mr. Thompson put the photograph down. He almost threw it into the trash, but ultimately, he just pushed it to the side. He picked up his pen and began to work on his lesson plan. He didn't even notice the photograph again.
