The excavation, undertaken with the barest of enthusiasm, yielded a small, metallic box. Sarah glared at it. Clearly, her younger self had been just as prone to making poor decisions.

She flipped open the latch, her movements stiff. Inside, she found a handwritten journal. She picked it up, her fingers tightening around the flimsy cover.

The first few entries were filled with adolescent dreams and aspirations, things that now seemed completely absurd. Sarah skimmed over them, her lips pursed in a thin line. Honestly, the sentimentality was almost offensive.

She slammed the journal shut, the sound echoing in the otherwise silent garden. She would take it back inside and burn it. She wasn’t wasting another moment on this pointless endeavor.
