The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the living room. James sank onto the sofa, the letter trembling in his hand. He’d unearthed it while sifting through old photographs. It was a letter he had written to his college girlfriend.

His face flushed with heat. He'd forgotten the sheer melodrama of his younger self. The overblown declarations of love, the promises of forever – they all felt hollow now, and slightly embarrassing.

He threw the letter onto the coffee table. He wanted to scrub the memories from his mind. He then went to the kitchen and made himself a stiff drink.
