“Ready?” Sarah asked, her voice bright, almost clinical. He just nodded, unable to meet her gaze. The interview room felt colder than he remembered, the air thick with unspoken tension. He felt a pressure building behind his eyes, a tightness in his chest. His hands trembled as he reached for the water glass on the table. He took a sip, the cold liquid did little to quench the inner fire that burned within. He glanced at Sarah. She was already answering the first question, her tone confident, her words measured and precise. He wanted to speak, to offer something of substance, but the words were lodged, useless, in his throat. He felt like a ghost, an observer in his own life.
