He woke with a jolt, a cold sweat clinging to his skin. He sat up, heart racing. The world seemed to spin. He needed to get up, go outside, check something. He didn’t know what.

He pushed himself to his feet, a low hum of anxiety vibrating through him. The morning light seemed harsh, unforgiving. The empty space where his car should have been was a gaping maw.

He stepped out onto the porch, his eyes scanning the street. He felt like he was forgetting something important. His hand instinctively went to his chest. He felt as if something was pulling him in every direction.
