The weight of the past settled over him. He was standing in the garage, the air thick with the smell of old paper and forgotten things. His mother, the woman of routine and structure, had kept every single school assignment. He felt a pressure in his chest, a tightening he couldn't explain.

He reached for a box labeled "High School History." As he lifted the lid, his vision swam. He dropped to his knees, his hands trembling. The room seemed to blur, the details becoming indistinct.
