The house looked different, somehow. Alex felt a strange pressure in his chest as he approached the front door. He unlocked it, the lock clicking loudly in the silence. The interior air felt thick, heavy with the weight of unseen years. He stepped inside.

He moved through the rooms, his movements slow and deliberate. He stopped in the hallway, his gaze fixed on a painting. He thought he should know what it depicted, what it meant, but the image eluded him, like a word on the tip of his tongue. He pressed his palms against his temples, trying to clear his head.
