The kitchen timer beeped, shrill and insistent. Sarah stumbled towards it, her movements clumsy, like she was wading through water. Her hands felt clumsy. She picked up the letter from the counter, the paper crinkling in her grasp. It was from her. To her mother. Before the… before everything.

She tried to place the date, but her mind refused to cooperate. The present dissolved, morphing into a series of disconnected images and fragmented feelings. She found herself drifting, lost in the echoing expanse of the house. Everything was…blurred.

The smell of burnt toast filled the air. She stared at the toaster, the black, smoking bread. She didn't remember starting the toast. She pressed the 'cancel' button on the toaster and sat at the kitchen table, the letter clutched in both hands, the world spinning gently around her.
