“No, no, no,” he muttered, the words a desperate plea. The official document lay open on the counter. The words were a physical weight on his chest. His breath hitched in his throat.

He stumbled backwards, knocking over a stack of mail. The sound of the falling envelopes startled him, but it also grounded him in reality. He was in his kitchen. He needed to pull himself together. He needed to…what?

His mind felt like a tangled web. He went to the fridge and poured himself a glass of water, which he then set down. He had no idea what he should be doing. The weight of the world had suddenly grown, too heavy to bear.
