Sarah slammed the file shut, the sound sharp in the sterile waiting room. The lawyer’s words still buzzed in her ears: "Your father... another family." Her vision swam, the patterned wallpaper blurring into a confusing kaleidoscope. She pressed her palms against her eyes, willing the images to solidify. Her carefully constructed life, the one built on the foundation of her parents, felt suddenly precarious. A knot formed in her stomach, twisting with a familiar, unwelcome tightness. She felt an urgent need to escape, to disappear into the anonymity of the city.
