He stared at the glowing screen, the damning words of the critic reflecting in his weary eyes. Chef Marco slumped against the wall of his tiny apartment, the city lights blurring through the rain-streaked window. The vibrant, chaotic energy of the city, which he usually found invigorating, now seemed to mock him with its relentless pulse. A dull ache throbbed behind his temples.

He ran a hand through his already dishevelled hair, the sensation of his fingers tangled in the strands oddly comforting. The thought of facing another service, another round of meticulous plating and intense scrutiny, was utterly crushing. All his passion, the years of dedication, felt suddenly hollow. He could barely bring himself to eat the stale bread on his kitchen counter.
