The sheer scale of it was overwhelming. The new house was enormous, a labyrinth of rooms that seemed to swallow the light. Every task, from organizing the pantry to assembling the bed frame, felt like scaling a mountain. The new house, a new era for him, seemed a very lonely place to be.

He was testing the locks on the old, rickety doors. One door, at the far end of the attic, felt different. It was heavier, more solid. He strained, but the lock wouldn’t budge. He felt the weight in his own chest and leaned. The door groaned open.
