Gemotions

The attic air hung thick and heavy, dust motes dancing in the lone sunbeam slicing through a crack in the boarded-up window. Sarah coughed, pulling the moth-eaten rug further into the light. Another fruitless weekend, searching for something, *anything* to spark some joy. She’d been feeling… empty. Like a deflated balloon.

Her fingers brushed against the brittle paper of a cardboard box. Inside, amidst yellowed wedding photos and a child's collection of well-loved stuffed animals, she found it. A crisp, typed letter, dated 1983. It was her mother’s handwriting on the envelope, the name of a company she vaguely remembered. Inside, a formal letter of resignation.

“Dear Mr. Henderson,” she read aloud, her voice flat. The reasons cited were vague, a polite request for ‘more challenging opportunities.’ Sarah felt a strange pull, a sense of… understanding. Her mother, too, had once felt this dull ache, this yearning for something more. She traced the cursive signature, a ghost of her mother's usual flourish.
