He hadn't been sleeping well lately. The persistent hum of loneliness had a way of echoing in the dead of night. Daniel pushed a forkful of scrambled eggs around his plate, the food suddenly tasteless. He'd been working on a novel for months, but the words felt hollow, lacking any spark. The manuscript lay abandoned on his desk, a testament to his fading inspiration.

A letter arrived. Official-looking. Inside, a terse message from a distant relative, informing him about a half-sister. His father, it seemed, had a life he'd never known. Daniel felt a strange numbness spread through him, a coldness that reached deep into his bones.

He poured himself another cup of lukewarm coffee, the bitter taste doing little to dispel the gloom. He stared out the window, at the grey, overcast sky. Everything felt flat, muted.
