The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the empty classroom, illuminating dust motes dancing in the stale air. Mr. Henderson slumped in his chair, the weight of another failed attempt to connect with the students pressing down on him. Another year, another generation lost in a sea of apathy. He ran a hand through his thinning hair, a gesture that had become a constant companion these days. The stack of ungraded papers mocked him from the corner of his desk, each one a testament to his perceived shortcomings. The bell had rung an hour ago, but he hadn't moved.

A sharp rap on the door startled him. He looked up, expecting to see the janitor. Instead, Sarah, a student from ten years ago, stood smiling shyly, a small, wrapped package clutched in her hands. He hadn't seen her since she graduated. He forced a smile, the muscles in his face protesting from lack of use.

“Mr. Henderson?” she asked tentatively. He waved her in, and she moved forward. The package, a small, rectangular box, held a beautifully crafted pen and a note. The words on the card, a thank you for “believing in me when no one else did,” unexpectedly brought a sting to his eyes.
