The email arrived mid-afternoon, nestled between a sales promotion for energy drinks and a reminder about library fines. Sarah stared at the subject line – “Important Announcement Regarding University Restructuring” – and a coldness spread through her. It was a grey, overcast day, the kind that always made the campus feel deserted, even with students milling about. Her hand trembled as she clicked.

The university was bankrupt, the message droned. Classes would cease. The campus, her home for the last three years, would be sold. Her coffee went cold on her desk, untouched. The carefully crafted schedule for her final semester – internships, the senior thesis, graduation – crumbled into dust in her mind.

She closed her laptop, her eyes stinging. The world outside seemed to shift. The familiar brick buildings, the worn cobblestone paths, the towering oak trees – all suddenly felt like cardboard cutouts, flimsy and about to be blown away. She needed air, and left her dorm, walking towards the muddy quad.
