The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the living room as she sat and stared out the window. The world seemed dull, the colors muted. Mark had been withdrawn, distant, his usual warmth replaced by a chill. She found the manuscript, hidden beneath the floorboards.

The title, scrawled in his familiar handwriting, was devastating: "The Fade of Jessica." The story was a bleak account of a woman slowly disappearing, her light dimming with each passing day.

She felt a wave of nausea. Her heart felt heavy in her chest. Everything felt wrong, as if the foundations of their life together were crumbling beneath her feet.
