Gemotions

Rain hammered against the corrugated iron roof of the shed, a rhythmic drumming that mirrored the dull ache in Eleanor's chest. She'd been clearing out her late grandfather’s things for weeks, each object a fresh pang of loss. Today’s task was the overgrown vegetable patch. She swung the pickaxe, its weight a familiar burden, the rusty metal meeting the hard earth with a stubborn thud. Sweat beaded on her forehead, and a strange exhaustion settled deep in her bones, even though the morning was still young. Then, a metallic clang. The pickaxe had struck something solid.

Kneeling, she brushed away the loose soil, revealing a tarnished metal box. Curiosity, a fleeting flicker in the gloom, prompted her to drag it free. As she pried open the lid, a waft of musty air escaped, carrying with it the scent of forgotten things. Inside, nestled amongst yellowed newspaper clippings and a faded photograph, was a small, leather-bound journal. The handwriting was hers, undeniably. Dates from when she was twelve. An unfamiliar, yet strangely comforting, voice whispered in her memory.
