The silence of the library was almost oppressive. Maria found herself wandering the stacks, the endless rows of books mirroring the monotonous repetition of her life. Her dreams of becoming a writer had faded, replaced by the crushing weight of reality. The words still appeared on the page, but the joy was gone. She felt the heavy weariness in her shoulders as she chose a book at random.

She was walking through a small, unused garden behind the library when she saw it. A small, metal box. She knelt down and began digging.
