"Condo, huh?" whispered Liam, tracing a finger across the notice taped to the mailboxes. He didn't raise his voice, but the word felt impossibly loud in the echoing hallway. The world had shifted on its axis.

He skipped his usual afternoon walk, and even missed his weekly coffee with his friend. His appetite had disappeared. He had tried to force himself to cook something, but gave up and simply stared at the ingredients, overwhelmed by their pointless abundance.

He slumped onto his couch, feeling the familiar springs dig into his back. The ceiling fan whirred overhead, a mechanical symphony of nothingness. He watched the light move across the blank wall.
