The constant noise was making it worse. The television blaring in the living room, her sister’s endless stream of phone calls, her mother humming in the kitchen - a symphony of sounds that amplified her inner turmoil.

She sat on the edge of her childhood bed, clutching a worn teddy bear. The scent of lavender from the old stuffed animal did nothing to soothe the churning in her gut. She felt like a small child, vulnerable and alone.

She glanced out the window, watching the streetlights illuminate the empty street. She wanted to escape, but knew there was nowhere to go. She was trapped.
