"I... I don't understand," Emily stammered, her voice barely a whisper. The nurse had gently explained the mix-up, but the information felt like a foreign language. Her mind struggled to translate. The air around her seemed to vibrate with a disquieting energy.

She felt a strange disconnect, as if she were observing her own reaction from a distance. Her hands trembled so much that she had to set her cup of tea down on the table to prevent it from spilling. The floral pattern on the mug blurred before her eyes.

She blinked rapidly, trying to clear her vision, but the room seemed to spin. The casual chatter of the other patients in the waiting area, a background noise that had previously been comforting, now grated on her nerves. She wanted to be alone. She wanted to hide.
