The aroma of freshly brewed coffee, usually a source of comfort, now only seemed to amplify the disquiet within Arthur. He’d been in the kitchen for twenty minutes, staring at the coffee machine, unable to bring himself to pour a cup. The details he’d learned had left him unsettled.

He returned to his office, the walk taking longer than usual. He sat at his desk, his gaze fixed on the screen. The cursor blinked, waiting for him to write the daily report. He couldn't. It sat there, mocking him.

The silence of the office amplified the internal noise. He leaned back in his chair, and it felt like it was breaking. He would need to make a change.
