“This is a mistake,” she muttered, her voice trembling. The unpacking was supposed to be a fresh start, a new beginning. Instead, everything felt tainted. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic, desperate rhythm.

She’d discovered the hidden room in the basement, behind the furnace. It was cold, damp, and smelled of mildew. Inside, she saw a row of metal lockers. Each one looked identical, each one held some terrible secret, she was certain.

She wanted to call her husband, to run and hide. But she was frozen, glued to the spot. Her muscles were rigid, her jaw clenched tight. The room seemed to be pulling her in, and she couldn't resist.
