The news had hit him hard, like a physical shock. James hadn’t slept a wink. He felt a throbbing ache behind his eyes and a tight band around his chest. He replayed the images of his son, Michael, over and over in his mind.

He went into the kitchen, his stomach churning, and grabbed a glass of water. His hand shook so badly he spilled half of it. He sat at the kitchen table, staring at the empty space where Michael usually sat. It felt barren and desolate.

He felt a deep, gnawing sense of unease. He couldn’t seem to concentrate or think straight. He picked up his phone, hesitating, then put it back down. What was he supposed to do?
