The empty gallery echoed with a silence that amplified her agitation. The exhibit had been a disaster. She was supposed to text her assistant, "I'm ruined." The message went to the art critic who'd given her a scathing review.

She kicked at a stray piece of paper, the sound sharp in the quiet space. She paced, her hands clenched into fists. She felt as though she could combust.

She imagined the critic’s smug expression. The review. Her career, possibly, was over. She wanted to scream. She had to regain control. She took a deep breath and stared out of the window at the city.
