The click, click, click of the knitting needles was usually soothing to Martha, a rhythm she’d followed for decades. Now, the sound felt like an accusation. It echoed the frantic pace of her anxieties. Leo, her daughter, had taken up knitting with a vengeance.

Leo's creations were flawless, intricate. Martha, by comparison, was a relative beginner. Leo was always on the cutting edge of pattern design. She was worried. She used to love the feel of the yarn sliding through her fingers, but now, every dropped stitch felt like a failure.

She'd moved to a different room but could still hear the rapid fire clicking. It felt as though she was being edged out of her comfort zone. The door to her craft room, where Leo was, felt like a barrier.
