The envelope was thick, heavy with official-looking paper. Sarah recognized the return address – a law firm she’d dealt with during the messy divorce. Her fingers trembled as she tore it open. Inside, a letter, followed by a DNA test result. The results were clear: she had a half-brother.

She sank into her armchair, the letter slipping from her numb fingers. Her throat closed, and a wave of nausea washed over her. She couldn’t seem to catch her breath. The quiet of her apartment, usually a comfort, now felt oppressive, suffocating.

She wanted to scream, to lash out, to somehow make this information disappear. Instead, she sat frozen, staring at the ceiling, picturing the father who'd left her, the father who’d apparently created another life she knew nothing about.
