The voicemail message was short and sweet, a woman’s voice, unfamiliar but undeniably familiar. "Hi, it's Emily. I got your number from… well, from your dad. I'd love to talk. Call me back when you get a chance." Liam rubbed his temples.

He immediately deleted the message. Then, he immediately pulled it back from the deleted folder. He played it again, then again, each repetition seeming to amplify the unsettling tremor that had begun in his chest.

He slammed his laptop shut, the abrupt sound startling him. He stalked to the window, staring at the bustling city below, feeling utterly alone in the midst of the crowd. He ran a hand through his hair, tugging at the strands.

He needed to escape. He needed to be somewhere quiet. He grabbed his keys and bolted out the door.
