Michael paced his small apartment, the worn rug under his feet offering no comfort. His unpublished novel, the culmination of years of writing, was virtually the same as the book that had just hit the bestsellers list. He clenched his fists, knuckles white, and the air in his chest felt like it was stuck. He could hardly breathe.

He had invested his dreams, his heart, and his soul into this project. The plot, the characters, even the obscure historical details he'd painstakingly researched – all mirrored in the published work. He felt the world closing in, leaving him alone in an empty room.

He sank into his armchair, the fabric scratching against his skin. His fingers traced the worn pages of his manuscript, a tangible reminder of what he had lost. The manuscript suddenly felt foreign, almost alien to him. The feeling of defeat threatened to swallow him whole.
