The air conditioning hummed, a monotonous drone that did little to ease the tension in her office. She stared at the financial report, her vision blurring. Her unique investment strategy, the one she had developed with so much effort, was now being implemented by a rival firm. She felt the sudden thud of her heart against her ribs.

She’d believed her approach was a breakthrough, a game-changer. The discovery that her competitor was working on the same project left her feeling exposed. The tightness in her throat made it difficult to swallow. She suddenly felt the need to flee the building.

She reached for her phone, but she could not think to call her friends. She could not speak to her family. Instead, she stared at the glass in front of her. The feeling of powerlessness had become overwhelming.
