Gemotions

The chipped ceramic mug trembled in Amelia's hand, its contents growing cold. She hadn't moved from the kitchen table in hours. Sunlight, once cheerful, now cast long, accusatory shadows across the room, mimicking the emptiness gnawing inside her. Her mother’s handwriting, bold and looping, dominated the page: "See the Northern Lights." A hollow laugh escaped Amelia's lips, a brittle sound in the suffocating silence. How could her mother, always so full of vibrant life, have wanted something so impossibly far away, so alien to the mundane reality of their lives?

Amelia pushed away from the table, the chair scraping loudly against the floorboards. She needed to do something, anything, to break the inertia. She grabbed her phone, scrolling aimlessly through contacts, then slammed it down on the counter. The vibrant photo of her mother smiling, taken just before the diagnosis, seemed to pierce through the space. She picked up the list again.
