The air in the house felt thick, charged. Mark ran his fingers through his hair, a nervous gesture he hadn't noticed he was doing. The building across the street had become a source of irritation, a constant reminder of how little control he had.

He’d always enjoyed the quiet of his garden, the gentle rustle of leaves. Now, even those sounds seemed to be overwhelmed by the construction. He walked outside, but it didn't help. He retreated back inside, shutting all the windows and doors. He was trying to find a safe place.
