The fluorescent lights of the dean's office hummed, a relentless, irritating sound that seemed to bore into Maya's skull. Her hands, clasped tightly in her lap, were clammy. She felt a tremor run through her, starting at her toes. The accusations hung in the air, heavy and poisonous, like a cloud.

“So, Ms. Rodriguez, can you explain the similarities?” The dean’s voice was neutral, but it felt like a judgment. Maya swallowed, the lump in her throat making it hard to speak.

She opened her mouth, but only a dry whisper escaped. She was trapped in a nightmare, a labyrinth of errors and accusations. Everything she had worked for, every late night at the library, all now seemed meaningless. She felt like her body was a cage.

The silence grew, pressing down on her. She focused on the intricate pattern of the carpet, the only anchor in this swirling vortex of unease, trying to stop herself from unraveling.
