He re-read the notice. It was brief, impersonal, and devastating. His mentor, the man who had taught him everything he knew about the craft, was gone. The world seemed to tilt. He felt a sudden, inexplicable heat flush his face.

He slammed his fist on the table, the sharp impact startling him. He sat in his chair, staring out the window, his mind racing. He had so many questions, so much he wanted to say. Now, there was no one to answer. He felt a crushing weight on his chest, a sensation of being trapped.

He ran his hands through his hair, tugging at the strands. He paced the small apartment, a frantic energy coursing through him. He felt as if he were losing his mind. He grabbed his coat, not knowing where he was going, only that he had to move.
