The waiting room seemed to shrink, the walls closing in on Emily. The fluorescent lights overhead hummed like angry bees. She kept straightening her skirt, fidgeting with the hem, as a nervous habit. The silence was deafening.

Her gaze kept darting to her old college friend, Chloe. She could not decipher Chloe’s expressions, but she felt as if Chloe was actively plotting against her. She felt vulnerable, exposed, with no defenses to ward against the other woman's quiet, controlled demeanor.

Suddenly, her name was called. Her heart leaped into her throat. She stood up slowly, her legs feeling like lead. She walked towards the interview room, her steps heavy, unsure of what she was about to face.
